St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is a beautiful multi-island state in the Eastern Caribbean comprising of 32 islands of which nine (9) are inhabited. The total population is estimated as 110, 000 with 100,000 people on the main island of St. Vincent and another 10,000 dispersed among the eight inhabited islands of the Grenadines. The main economic activities include wholesale and retail, agriculture and construction. In the last census conducted in 2012, eighty –three percent (83%) of the population identified themselves as Christians.
In 2000, an eight-member mission team sent out from the Port of Spain Church of Christ moved to St. Vincent to start a church of our fellowship. Two disciples from SVG that were living aboard at the time moved back home to join the team to help with the work. Interestingly, all the members of the mission team were single and they quickly grew into a tight-knit, fun-loving group exemplifying the fellowship of Acts 2: 42-47. The inaugural service was held on December 17th , 2000 where 101 persons were in attendance. The first convert in St. Vincent was a young single woman who remains faithful to this day!
The home base for the church was eventually established in the capital city of Kingstown and became a legal faith based organization in 2002 incorporated as the ‘Kingstown International Church of Christ’. At the end of 2018, the church embarked on a strategic planning exercise with the aim of identifying some foundational principles upon which to build and some goals to pursue over an initial three-year period. In drafting our plan, we took into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of our local fellowship and also the opportunities and threats that exist within our mission field. The exercise resulted in the crafting of our mission and vision statements as well as identifying goals that the disciples were enthusiastic and unified about pursuing. These goals were designed to stimulate spiritual maturity through prayer, sound doctrine, sincere fellowship, vibrant worship and outreach (specifically in seeking the lost and serving the poor). Some of the planned activities emanating from our main goals include:
- Participating in the Damian Jean- Baptiste Caribbean School of Ministry (DJBCSM) to improve our teaching and practice of sound doctrine.
- Developing and maintaining an effective media ministry to reach more people, and a more diverse demographic, with the gospel in a world now consumed with social media.
- Fostering partnerships with like-minded organizations to sustainably meet the needs of the poor.
- Identifying and utilizing in-house skills to serve our community.
- Maintaining the connection with our regional and international brothers and sisters to avoid isolation and losing sight of the global connectedness of our fellowship as we strive together to win the world for Christ.
In 2020, we will celebrate 20 years as a movement of God in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We have much to celebrate and celebrate we will, but there is still much work to be done! So we ask for your prayers and continued support as the disciples here in SVG strive with all of the energy that God provides to play our role in our regional effort to Reach Every Beach!
